Tree-Free Stationery & Cards SHAKYA DESIGN Shakya Design actively promotes tree-free paper by using it for our mala presentation cases, business correspondence and in providing it in stationery sets and cards. Our bodhi seed cards are hand made in Nepal using Lokta bush. Lokta is only found above 6500 ft. in the Himalayan Mountains. Gathering the trimmings of raw Lokta is a cottage industry which employs many men & women, and helps to impove the standard of living in the impoverished rural areas of Nepal. Hand made in India, our stationery sets include paper using 100% garment industry waste (cotton, silk, wool), agricultural waste (sugarcane, cocount, banana fiber) and decorative materials (flowers, leaves, grass, bamboo, jute). No trees are destroyed to create this paper. Each sheet of paper is made individually by hand using an artform over one thousand years old. It is an eco-friendly process with minimum impact on the environment. Our--and your--support of this cottage industry helps to provide income and right livelihood of village workers in India (Pictures below). Sets include 15 sheets of (6.25" x 9") stationery and 10 (6.5" x 4.34") envelopes and come in a matching folder. For gifts or personal use. |

In Nepal, one would never write on the card, it is considered to be part of the gift. This card is meant to be used over and over again, with just the insert being replaced. The older the card is the more valuable it becomes because of all of the giving that has been associated with it. When it is finally worn out you may frame it and hang it in your home as a sign of prosperity. You can sign and date the card if you like, to document it's travel. A bamboo latch artistically closes the card. |
