Shakya Design offers prayer shawls in pashmina or wool. Prayer, or meditation shawls are used in many spiritual traditions. It is thought that the earliest use of prayer shawls was in the Hindu tradition over 3000 years ago. Later, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity have used the shawl for prayer, meditation, and cerimonial use.

A prayer shawl can have the effect of covering, or enveloping the mundane garments of our everyday life with a spiritual intention and creating an intimate space in which to connect with one's spitual center. Prayer shawls can give a sense of turning within, helping the practitioner to focus more deeply within.

Wool Shawls

Shakya Design wool prayer shawls were hand-loomed in Nepal from 100% wool, using traditional techniques and under fair trade conditions. After the weaving process, the material was brushed to bring out its unique softness. Shakya Design offers these shawls in black, charcoal, coffee, cinnamon and light sage.

Pashmina Shawls

Pashmina is the Indian/Persian word for Cashmere wool (from Kashmir). Pashmina has been produced by hand in Nepal for thousands of years. It comes from a native Himalayan goat whose soft under-fleece is shed once a year after extremely cold winters. The wool is gathered by villagers, cleaned, spun and woven by hand and then dyed. Our pashmina prayer scarves are handmade in Nepal using traditional methods. They are a blend of pashmina and silk, giving it a soft, light feel, slender drape, and sheen. Shakya Design offers these shawls in black, grey and ivory.
