Quan Yin (Chenrezig in Tibetan; Kanzeon in Japanese; Avalokiteshwara in Sanscrit) represents the Manifestation of Compassion in the Universe, the spiritual quality one nurtures within oneself, and on a devotional level the compassionate help one seeks. Quan Yin transcends gender, and depictions may be male, female or have characteristics of both. Depictions show Quan Yin holding or pouring from a vase which holds the Waters of Compassion, or holding a willow twig, which represents the easing of suffering. Other depictions show Quan Yin holding a ball-like Nyoi Jewel, representing Englightenment resting in the Hands of Compassion. In another famous depiction, Quan Yin is a many armed figure, with each hand holding a different object, symbolizing the "ten thousand ways" one can come to see compassion in the world. Quan Yin may be pictured with a mala, representing practice or spiritual effort. The famous mantra, "Om Mani Padme Hum" ("Hail to the Jewel In the Lotus") is associated with Quan Yin.
