Shakya Design offers malas and focus jewelry in mammoth ivory. The mammoth ivory offered on this page are one-of-a-kind peices are not available in quantity. The item that is shown is the mala you will receive. Each mala, or prayer beads, is made of 108 mammoth ivory beads and a hand carved mammoth ivory pendant. The pendants are intricately carved by a Chinese master carver and takes many weeks to complete.

Mammoths flourished during the Pleistocen epoch--from 1.6 million years ago to the end of the last ice age. Except for one dwarf species, the last mammoth species became extinct around 10,000 years ago. Mammoth remains have been found in Europe, Africa, Asia, Siberia, and North America.

Mammoth ivory provides a humane alternative to using elephant ivory which, on a large scale, includes the suffering and killing of elephants for their tusks. The mammoth ivory that we use has been legally acquired and certified through our carvers.

The Siberian mammoth ivory that is used for the beads and pendants used in Shakya Design malas and jewelry displays natural variation in color and luster and are soft and smooth to the touch.

A Chinese master carver has taken the mammoth ivory and created intricate and beautiful pendants which we then make into unique one-of-a-kind mala and jewelry peices.

All components in these malas are 100% mammoth ivory.

Mammoth Ivory Buddha Mala 108-6mm mammoth ivory beads, hand-carved Buddha in meditation mudra,
seated on lotus, *Buddhist swastika on chest; hand-knotted with gold/tan thread.

The Swastika is a symbol that has been linked with negative connotations associated with Nazi Germany. Its origins, however, were prevalent in many ancient cultures, thousands of years before it was appropriated by the Third Reich. It originated as an auspicious symbol for good fortune and well-being on all who see it. In Buddhism, the symbol moves in an anti-clockwise direction and represents the Buddha's heart and mind, appearing on the Buddha's chest in sculptural representations.
