Shakya Design offers malas and focus jewelry in mammoth ivory. The mammoth ivory offered on this page are one-of-a-kind pieces are not available in quantity. The item that is shown is the mala you will receive. Each mala, or prayer beads, is made of 108 mammoth ivory beads and a hand carved mammoth ivory pendant. The pendants are intricately carved by a Chinese master carver and takes many weeks to complete.
Mammoths flourished during the Pleistocene epoch--from 1.6 million years ago to the end of the last ice age. Except for one dwarf species, the last mammoth species became extinct around 10,000 years ago. Mammoth remains have been found in Europe, Africa, Asia, Siberia, and North America.
Mammoth ivory provides a humane alternative to using elephant ivory which, on a large scale, includes the suffering and killing of elephants for their tusks. The mammoth ivory that we use has been legally acquired and certified through our carvers.
The Siberian mammoth ivory that is used for the beads and pendants used in Shakya Design malas and jewelry displays natural variation in color and luster and are invitingly smooth to the touch.
Mammoth ivory is unique among natural materials for its ability to render exquisite detail. A Chinese master carver has taken the mammoth ivory and created intricate and beautiful pendants which we then make into unique one-of-a-kind mala and jewelry pieces.
All components in these malas are 100% certified mammoth ivory.

This one of a kind Quan Yin, with smooth, graceful lines, is hand carved from a single piece of mammoth ivory. It is also smooth to the touch and emanates a feeling of serenity and peace to any meditation space. It measures 11 inches high by 2 3/8 inches wide at the halo, by 1 inch at the base. The carved wooden base is 3 ½ inches high by 5 inches wide, by 3 ½ inches deep.
Total height of statue with base is 13 inches.

Mammoth Ivory Manjushri Mala
This mala has 108-8mm round mammoth ivory beads, mammoth ivory guru bead, large mammoth ivory Manjushri on lotus pendant and hand-knotted with gold/tan thread. This pendant is very intricately carved and is larger and thicker than most other pendants we have offered.
Manjushri holds the sword of wisdom in his right hand and the stem of a lotus which holds a text representing the Prajnaparamita text in his left hand.
Pendant measurements: 2 1/4"H x 1 5/8"W x 11/16" at base.

Mammoth Ivory Jizo Mala
108-8mm oval mammoth ivory beads, mammoth ivory guru bead and mammoth ivory Jizo pendant and is hand-knotted on gold/tan thread. The intricately carved pendant depicts Jizo Bodhisattva seated on a lotus, with his right hand holding a ringed staff and his left hand in the mudra of concentration holding a jewel of the Dharma. Jizo is considered the protector of women, children (including the unborn child), travelers and animals. He is said to have vowed to not enter Buddhahood until all the hells are emptied, and thus one who helps all those who are suffering.
Pendant measures 1 15/16 inches high, 1 ¼ inch wide, 7/16 inch deep at the base.

Mammoth Ivory Quan Yin in Royal Ease
108 bead -6mm round mammoth ivory beads, mammoth ivory guru bead, mammoth ivory Quan Yin pendant and is hand-knotted on gold/tan thread. This pendant depicts Quan Yin seated on a lotus in the bodhisattva posture, holding a mala in her left hand. Quan Yin is the bodhisattva of compassion.

This pendant is intricately carved, depicting Tara seated on a lotus, right leg extended and left leg bent, holding the stem of a lotus in each hand. Her right hand is in the mudra of granting siddhis, her left hand is in the mudra of the Triple Gem.

Mammoth Ivory Chrenrezig Mala
108-7mm round mammoth ivory beads, mammoth ivory guru bead, four-armed Chenrezig pendant on hand-knotted tan/gold thread. Chenrezig is the Tibetan Buddhist deity of compassion, holding a crystal mala in the right hand symbolizing wisdom and the stem of a white lotus in the left hand symbolizing compassion. The other set of arms hold the jewel of enlightenment at the heart. Chenrezig (Aveloketesvara/ Quan Yin) are all depictions of the deity of compassion.

Manjushri Mammoth Ivory Mala
108-8mm mammoth ivory beads, mammoth ivory guru bead, and mammoth ivory Manjushri on lotus, seated on the lion. The pendant is intricately carved, hand-knotted on gold/tan thread and depicts Manjushri holding the sword of wisdom. In the Zen Buddhist tradition, he is riding the ‘beast of self’, representing the wisdom that transcends the duality of belief in a truly existent self. Riding the lion symbolizes fearlessness.
